I saw this on Pintrest so I decided to try it. It works! I saved the bottom cores of some romaine lettuce heads and put them in a bowl with a little water (I need to add a little water every day). After a few days, leaves started to sprout! It's not enough to make a salad, but if I had a lot of them it would be. Also, you can try this with green onions - just plant the root ends in soil in a pot and keep them in a light windowsill. I have a friend who grows lemon grass the same way (find it at your local Asian grocery store). Good luck!
